A beautiful UK city has captured the imaginations of many after people saw one of its beautiful streets which is absolutely steeped in history.

Visitors to the Somerset town went crazy when they saw Vicars’ Close, thought to be the only complete medieval street left in England.

Originally designed to communally house the choir who used to sing at the famous Wells Cathedral in the 1300s, the tradition has continued right through to the 21st Century, with current members of the Vicars’ Choral residing there now.

The Wells street is grade I listed and backs straight onto the cathedral, leaving the residents with one of the world’s shortest commutes.

Each house originally had a ground floor hall of 20 by 13 feet and an upper floor of the same size, although the street did get tampered with by the original Queen Elizabeth.

There were originally forty-two houses - one per vicar - but she restricted the number of vicars down to twelve, meaning there were a lot of spare houses.

The city of Wells meanwhile is a gorgeous place for a UK getaway. Wells Cathedral was built between 1175 and 1490 - the UK’s first in Gothic style - and currently houses one of the largest collections of historic stained glass in the country.

Meanwhile, the grand old structure is also home to Great Britain’s second oldest clock mechanism, Wells Clock, as well as one of only four chained libraries in the UK. These hold their books by chain, meaning no one can steal them - Hereford Cathedral is perhaps most well-known for it.

Meanwhile, the medieval Bishop’s Palace has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years.

The city is also home to a number of festivals, and has some beautiful nature reserves and landscapes just a short while away.

It is an affluent area - the average property price in Wells is £336,000 - well above the national average of £285,000
