A British woman has been arrested after a top Spanish politician was shot in the face.

Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former head of the People's Party, was gunned down by a gunman on a motorbike in a shocking assassination attempt in Madrid.

The attack happened in Madrid, with the Brit allegedly being held alongside her partner, who is Spanish. A third person is also being held in connection with the shooting.

The arrests come after detectives were reportedly hunting a car after combing through CCTV of the victim's movements days before the attack. Local reports claim the woman and her partner were arrested after a car was removed by cops near to an area where trees were about to be pruned.

Mr Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face in broad daylight in Spain's capital city on November 9.

The victim, former regional leader of the right-wing Popular Party in Catalonia before breaking away to help form the far-right Vox party, told police from his hospital bed he blamed Iran for the shooting because of his ties with the country’s opposition.

Local media reports suggest the woman was held in Lanjaron, a spa town near the Aplujarras region, with her partner arrested with her.

The other arrest is understood to have taken place in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola.

Earlier this morning, a spokesman for Spain’s National Police said: “I can confirm three people have been arrested by police in connection with the ongoing investigation into the shooting in Madrid earlier this month.

“Two are Spanish nationals. We are not in a position at this moment in time to confirm the nationality of the third person held.

“Two of the arrests took place in Granada and the other in the province of Malaga.”

The 78-year-old victim was targeted near his home by a man in a black helmet on the back of the motorbike, driven by an accomplice.

The controversial politician was among the first to be placed on Iran's terrorist list due to his support for the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (MEK), a group whose goal is to overthrow the Tehran regime.

He is also a member of the European Friends of Israel, a lobby group aiming to defend Israel's interests within the European Union.

Spanish investigators have yet to comment on a possible motive for the shooting, with no other information on the woman arrested other than she is British.
