Commuters have been hit with chaos after 'smoke' in a train station tunnel prompted a huge fire alert.

Firefighters descended on Canary Wharf station this morning (Tuesday, November 21), with Jubilee line commuters left queuing outside.

Elizabeth line passengers at Whitechapel were also hit with huge queues and crammed platforms, pictures from Express.co.uk reporter Jonathan Kanengoni show large crowds of people seemingly stuck in the station.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said firefighters were called at 8.57am this morning after reports of "smoke" at the Canary Wharf station.

They said the fumes were likely caused by "train brakes overheating".

They said: "Firefighters have attended, and following investigation, have established there is no fire.

"The report of smoke is believed to have been caused by overheating brakes from a train. We were called at 8.57am and the incident was over for firefighters by 9.33am."

Despite no blaze being detected, large crowds were visible in the stations and it's thought it could have taken some time for the platforms to clear with so many heading to work at this time of day.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "The Jubilee Line section of Canary Wharf station was temporarily evacuated today at 08:56am following the reporting of an overheated brake. The station is now operating as normal."

Last month the Elizabeth Line named in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II experienced its busiest day with more than 738,000 people using the service on September 28.

Transport for London said: "There was a fire alert at Canary Wharf station this morning at around 9am. It was caused by a brake fault with a Jubilee line train, which disturbed some dust in the tunnel, rather than smoke.

"The train was removed from service and the station reopened at 09:30.

"There's currently minor delays on the westbound Jubilee line between Stratford and Green Park, with a good service on the rest of the line."
