Tom Critchley, who carved out a career spotting sports stars, was a corporal in the Royal Engineers. He was diagnosed with early-stage rectal cancer in April 2022.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester soon offered Tom, 76 – from Astley near Leigh – the chance to join the Aphrodite trial.

It involves higher doses of radiotherapy being given with chemo, meaning patients are spared surgery and often a stoma, too.

By February, the club and bar singer was given the all-clear, while today his scans continue to show no signs of cancer.

Tom, who spent 20 years with Man Utd and eight with Bolton Wanderers, urged others like him: “Don’t be frightened of taking a chance on a clinical trial. Do it and hope you get the result that I have.
