'Really easy' chocolate cake recipe takes 20 mins to make - it's the perfect weekend treat

This chocolate cake is the perfect pudding to indulge in this weekend and is delicious when served with tea or coffee.

You can get a tasty chocolate cake in any supermarket or bakery, but baking at home is much more fun - not to mention impressive.

If you're having guests around this week, Delicious has provided a simple chocolate cake which serves 10 chocoholics.

Delicious said: "This is a really easy chocolate cake recipe. Once you’ve made the cake itself, you can dress it up any way you fancy – for example, you could fill it with whipped cream and jam instead of chocolate icing.

"Or, after icing or buttercreaming, why not decorate with colourful sweets or chocolate buttons for a birthday cake?"

This recipe is incredibly easy to follow so it's a great one to get young kids or grandkids involved in making.

Ingredients

  • 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
  • 225g caster sugar
  • Four medium free-range eggs
  • 175g self-raising flour
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • One tsp baking powder
  • Two to three tbsp milk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. Grease two 20cm sandwich tins with a bit of butter and baseline with baking paper. Grab a whole and add the butter and sugar. Beat them together with an electric hand whisk until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each one. Sift in the flour, baking powder and cocoa. Gently fold into the mixture.
  3. Add a little milk until you have a dropping consistency, then divide between the tins. Only fill the sandwich tins 3/4 full.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or use the skewer test, where a skewer inserted into the centre will come out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Let it cool slightly. Beat the butter and icing sugar together in a bowl with an electric hand whisk until the mixture is light and fluffy, then fold in the melted chocolate.
  6. Evenly spread some icing over one of the cakes. Carefully put the other cake on top. Gently spread the rest of the icing over the cake.
