Britain is to be plunged into freezing temperatures as the Met Office has warned the mercury is to plummet to sub-zero this week and experts claim the nation will be hit by 600-mile wall of snow.

According to the weather maps, the mercury levels will fall rapidly this week as the first signs of an early winter arrive.

It comes after strong gusts of up to 60mph battered Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands overnight.

At present, there is a thunderstorm warning over southern England from the Met Office. Weather experts believe that this week there will be cooler air, particularly in the northeast for the middle of the week with a touch of frost by night.

New weather maps show temperatures will plummet to near freezing in some areas, including northern England and some parts of Scotland. By Thursday, the Met Office says it'll be just 1C in Dalwhinnie, Scottish Highlands, and 3C in and around Aberdeen.

Meterologists suggest that the weather will settle down by Sunday but the freezing temperatures will make a return by midweek next week. It is expected that the Scottish Highlands will witness some overnight frosts reaching temperature -1C between -5C.

Jim Dale from British Weather Services told Express.co.uk: “The freezing temperatures will probably revert by midweek next week with overnight frosts in the glens around -1C to -5C. It is all very interchangeable at the moment. Most of the focus right now is on the universal wind and rain, with this Thurddat being monitored very carefully.”

Those living in Edinburgh will wake to a nippy -1C morning on Sunday, with the likes of Birmingham, Glasgow and Kendal feeling a chilly 1C.

James Madden from Exacta Weather said Britain faces at least one or two snow events before Christmas, with maps showing up to 600-miles of snow gripping the nation on November 18.

He said: "A sudden stratospheric warming event from later this month and into December could change that outlook to an even colder and more wintry theme for many parts of the country, and would drastically change the overall outlook for December as a whole.

"There is a chance we could see a number of wintry blasts in the run-up to Christmas.”

Met Office's deputy chief meteorologist Brent Walker said: “As we head through second half of this week cold air will push southwards across the country and there is a risk that showers over mountains of Scotland could turn wintry.

"By the weekend we expect all regions of the UK to be in the cold airmass and overnight frosts are possible.

“With high pressure continuing to dominate our weather early next week, it will start largely fine, settled, and cool by day, with cold nights and a risk of rural air frosts in places.

Any early morning mist or fog should clear quickly and there could be a few showers possible around some coasts at times."
