Traveller praised for ‘excellent defence measure’ against condensation and mould

Condensation is a precursor for long-term problems like mould and mildew, yet it is all too often ignored.

Condensation is a nuisance that many households contend with as the winter cold rolls in, and ignoring the seemingly harmless droplets could come at a cost.

The liquid can pose various inconveniences to buildings if left unchecked as it provokes the development of mould and other unwanted growths.

When water droplets condense on a surface it’s because water vapour has reached a "dew point" as it cools in the air. Alternatively, it may occur when the air becomes too saturated with water vapour and can no longer hold any liquid.

Fortunately, solutions exist, as Jessy Muller discovered when she embarked on her nomadic lifestyle in 2017.

The traveller, who lives in an RV, recently shared the hacks she has found to be most effective in a short clip posted to her social media account.

She started by saying: “I live in this old RV with my cat Moo and I’m going to tell you how I deal with condensation.”

Her camera panned to her mattress on the floor, with a giant patch of mould at its centre. She told followers that her anti-condensation hacks can ensure this type of problem does not occur.

“Getting rid of moisture build up on your windows is as easy as wiping it up and sending it down the drain,” she noted.

The secret is to open windows and let cold air seep into the room so that humidity has an escape route. She added: “Turn on a fan to [...] get the place aired out.”

Muller also points out that mould thrives in the organic materials of our mattresses, which need to be protected, especially when kept in small spaces.

“Painting and sealing your wood is an excellent defence measure,” she explained.

Experts at Fine Homebuilding confirm that a properly applied paint job can prevent moisture from getting into the wood and causing problems.

Drawing attention back to her mattress, the content creator added: “Discovering a mould mattress is extremely common in this lifestyle, but not all people talk about it.

"The reason this is so common is because most people have their mattress directly on plywood with no ventilation.”

The comment was quick to spark curiosity among viewers. One wrote: “Thanks to this video, I learned my $1,500 mattress is completely [mouldy] on the under side and now I have to replace it.”

Referring to their own RV, another commentator quipped: “Condensation is our enemy! It’s so bad in ours”.
