Bananas can go gooey and brown in what feels like no time at all, unless you have a few up your sleeve.

Dole Food, one of the world's largest producers of fruit and vegetables, shared how banana lovers can keep this fresh and fabulous for longer.

Many people keep their bananas on the kitchen counter or fruit bowl, but this might not be the optimal place for them.

Dole Food explained that bananas should be kept cool and protected from the light, stored at around 12°C, as they will ripen quicker if they are too warm.

The experts said: "A darker room without direct sunlight is ideal. A warm kitchen is therefore not the best place for your bananas."

If your bananas are already ripe, pop them in the fridge (they won't ripen any further in this cool environment).

And don't worry if the skin turns brown, it won't impair the taste of the banana - unless perhaps you're planning on eating the skin.

A special trick for preserving bananas that have already been sliced up is to add a little juice.
