There's a new American Western drama riding into town and it goes by the name of Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

The brand new western series is the latest Yellowstone spin-off from critically acclaimed writer Taylor Sheridan.

Starring David Oyelowo as the lead character, the new period drama follows famous American lawman Bass Reeves as he rises out of enslavement to become the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshal West of the Mississippi River.

In the early 1800s, Bass became known as a partial inspiration for The Lone Ranger after reportedly arresting over 3,000 outlaws during his lengthy career.

The series also stars Dennis Quaid as a fellow U.S. Deputy Marshall Sherill Lynn, as well as Donald Sutherland as Fort Smith's Hanging Judge Parker.

How Many Episodes does Lawman: Bass Reeves have?

The series will consist of a total of eight episodes, which will run for around an hour each.

While many of Taylor Sheridan's series exist as limited series, there's always a chance his new Western could return for a second season.

With the title "Lawmen," it's also possible Taylor returns to tell another story as part of an anthology series.

This means the show's potential second season could continue the story of Bass Reeves, or focus on another famous sheriff from America's treacherous past.

Is the series a spin-off from Yellowstone?

While the drama was originally pitched as a spin-off of the Yellowstone prequel, 1883, the new series will no longer take place in the Yellowstone universe.

This is likely down to the fact that Bass Reeves is a real person from American history.

"I've been trying to get this one made for over eight years now—and I have Taylor to thank for rejuvenating the Western," David told Esquire earlier this year.

"It's understandable that people would think that because the Yellowstone universe continues to be built out—but this is a separate story," he further explained.

Where Is Lawman: Bass Reeves Streaming?

Much like Taylor's previous Western hits, his new project will stream exclusively on Paramount+ and they will air every Sunday.

The first two episodes premiered on November 5, with each new episode hitting the platform weekly thereafter through to December 17.

Lawman: Bass Reeves is available to stream on Paramount+ in the UK and US.
