Tom Holland may be in Disney’s MCU thanks to a deal with Sony, but the latter studio continues to churn out villain solo movies set in other universes.

Following Tom Hardy’s Venom, Jared Leto’s Morbius and the delayed Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter comes Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web.

However this time the latter’s a heroine facing Ezekiel Sims, a villain with Spider-Man-like abilities, as can be seen in the first trailer.

Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney plays Spider-Woman among a foursome of female Spider-heroes.

It’s unclear yet if this is set in the same universe as Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Mans, the other non-MCU villains or in another reality entirely.

The film’s synopsis reads: “‘Meanwhile, in another universe…’ In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.”

Madame Web hits UK cinemas on February 16, 2024.
