Season six, part one of The Crown has landed and spends time on Princess Diana’s (played by Elizabeth Debicki) last days and her summer romance with Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla).

In the Netflix show, it’s suggested Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Daw) called the paparazzi to snap shots of Princess Diana and his son as he engineered a romance between the two.

While it was unclear who called in the photographers, in real-life Mohamed was said to have refused to step up security after calls from Dodi in the wake of the pursuing paparazzi.

Many are curious to know about the actor who plays photographer Mario in The Crown - here’s where you may have seen him before.

Who plays Mario Brenna in The Crown?

British star Enzo Cilenti portrays the famed paparazzi photographer Mario Brenna, who pocketed a hefty sum for his snaps of Dodi and Diana.

Viewers may recognise him for his roles in Game of Thrones, The Girlfriend Experience, Luther and the BBC adaptation of Les Misérables which also featured The Crown star Dominic West.

Some of his other roles have included the Hollywood movies In the Loop, Next, Guardians of the Galaxy and the Starz series The Serpent Queen.

According to IMDb, he will next be starring in The Beekeeper, which is slated to come out in 2024 and is in post-production.

Who was Mario Brenna?

The real-life Mario was a renowned photographer who worked both for prestigious fashion houses but was also able to capture images of A-listers.

Princess Diana and Dodi were indeed photographed by Mario as the couple were enjoying some downtime on board the Jonkial yacht off the coast of Sardinia back in 1997.

Mario, who lived in Monaco at the time, was said to have spotted the vessel while he was working on other assignments, The Independent reported.

The photos went on to make Mario millions after they were published in the Sunday Mirror.

Meanwhile, London photographer Jason Fraser who helped broke the initial deal would then help Mario with the rights to the images in both the USA and Australia.

The photos taken by Mario went around the world and caused much scandal and even more intrigue around whom Diana was now dating since her high-profile divorce.

There’s still not been verification over who exactly alerted Mario but the photographer was hailed by journalists for his ability to move from high end fashion photoshoots to working as a member of the paparazzi and obtaining candid celebrity shots.

Mario is said to have flown to Jason’s home in London and showed him in the prints.

They spread them out on Jason’s kitchen floor and looked with surprise at them.

Jason later recalled to the Mail Online: "When he showed me the prints, we spread them out over the kitchen floor and we sat in silence.

“I didn't know what to do. I knew nothing would ever [be] the same again."
