Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been to Christmas at Sandringham since 2018, but lately there seems to have been a shift in their relationship with the royals.

and would be "happy to accept" an invite to spend Christmas with the at Sandringham, according to a royal source.

Despite ongoing tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the Firm, if were to reach out to his youngest son the source added it was "highly unlikely" the invite would be declined.

Harry and Meghan have not spent a Christmas with the royals since 2018, when Meghan was still pregnant with their son Prince Archie, and the family now tend to spend the festive season in California.

A friend told The Sunday Times: "I can’t imagine the Sussexes would decline an invitation to spend time with His Majesty. As of yet, there have not been any invitations for the holidays."

It has been reported this week that Harry reached out to his father for his 75th birthday, with both him and Meghan apparently speaking to him on the phone.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet also reportedly recorded a happy birthday message for their grandfather, as it seems the frostiness between the two parties has begun to thaw.

Archie and Lilibet are being raised in Montecito and have little contact with the royals, with Lilibet only ever meeting Charles once, last year at the Platinum Jubilee.

They also do not have much of a relationship with their cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, although it is understood the Waleses and the Sussexes exchange presents for each other's children.

A source close to the Sussexes says the couple would be keen to spend some time with the King at Sandringham for Christmas or Balmoral next summer, but there are difficulties with the family returning to the UK.

Earlier this year Harry and Meghan were evicted from their UK base, Frogmore Cottage, and as such they no longer have a secure place to stay in Britain.

This means they would require a formal invitation from the King or Buckingham Palace to stay at "protected property".

Another risk for the royals is that if Harry and Meghan are welcomed back into the royal fold, private conversations may end up becoming publicised, especially after the furore surrounding the Duke's tell-all memoir Spare.

One source close to the Sussexes said: "They realise they’ve got to a place where private conversions and calls could be questioned if they’re going to be private."

Following the publication of details about the birthday call a royal insider told the Telegraph: "The King and Queen worry that if stories about phone calls and private conversations make it into the public domain they will be accused of leaking to the press, even if it’s obvious it didn’t come from them.
"They just think 'it’s in the public domain, and public domain equals bad'."
