As a chill lingers in the air, Britons are reaching for cosy and warm knitwear, but do you know how best to look after them so they last year after year?

In partnership with SilkFred, an online fashion retailer, Lynsey has shared her top hacks for taking care of knitted fabric.

"First things first, it’s important to know that it is best to wash your knitted clothing items every two to three wears," said Lynsey.

This isn't too far off from what the British public does already, according to a survey done by SilkFred.

In the questionnaire, 58 percent of respondents said they wash their knitwear every three to four wears.

But Lynsey thinks leaving at least four wears before you pop knitwear into the washing machine is a bit "risky".

"The garments may have picked up numerous germs and bacteria, particularly if you’ve been wearing them outside of the house," she fretted.

When it comes down to washing your knitwear, however, there are certain factors to consider – including what not to wash knitwear with.

"You should save up your knitwear and wash them together, ensuring you don’t mix them with other items that could cause damage such as zips or bra clasps," Lynsey cautioned.

"Also, if it is machine washable, it’s wise to use a knitwear-specific laundry detergent and make sure you use the delicate or knitwear setting on your machine."

Another top tip of Lynsey's is to always check the care label, which could reveal that your special knit is only suitable for hand-washing.

Help! I don't want my knitwear's colour to fade

Lynsey's top tips to prevent colours from fading from knitwear are:

  • Wash your items inside out
  • Use a colour catcher
  • Use a bit of fabric conditioner
  • Don't wash on a really high temperature
  • Add sea salt to your wash.

Help! My knitwear has shrunk in the wash

Lynsey said: "If you happen to have a knitwear disaster then this handy hack might help revive your items.

"You will simply need to soak your knitwear in cold water with a measure of fabric conditioner mixed in with the water.

"Leave overnight and in the morning, wring out and try and stretch it back into shape. Your knitwear should then be salvaged."

How to store knitwear correctly

Lynsey said you should "never, ever hang knitwear on a hanger" as it will lose its shape.

Instead, you must fold your knitted jumpers so that the neckline doesn't become baggy.
