Bone-chilling temperatures into the minus teens are on the way for the UK at the end of this week and new weather maps show where could be hardest hit.

Winter is coming for much of the country and the mercury could plummet well below minus in some areas in the coming days as icy conditions take hold.

Weather forecasters predict the cold snap will affect those living in the north of England and Scotland, with temperatures in the Highlands already dropping to -6C in the past 48 hours.

As well as wintry conditions, the Met Office has also said a large band of heavy rain will sweep across UK bringing more torrential downpours on already sodden ground.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Brent Walker, told GB News: "As we head through second half of this week cold air will push southwards across the country and there is a risk that showers over mountains of Scotland could turn wintry.

"By the weekend we expect all regions of the UK to be in the cold airmass and overnight frosts are possible.

"With high pressure continuing to dominate our weather early next week, it will start largely fine, settled, and cool by day, with cold nights and a risk of rural air frosts in places.

"Any early morning mist or fog should clear quickly and there could be a few showers possible around some coasts at times."

Looking forward to a wet weekend and next week the Met Office forecast for Saturday November 18 to Monday November 27 said: "Unsettled on Saturday with outbreaks of rain and strong winds spreading across the majority of the UK.

"Brighter, more showery conditions are expected to follow from the west later, with showers or longer spells of rain focussed in the north on Sunday.

"Into the following week, unsettled weather is expected to continue across northern areas, with further spells of rain and strong winds at times.

"Across the south of the UK, conditions will probably become somewhat drier and more settled, although some spells of rain may still spread across at times. It will be widely mild at first but through the following week temperatures will return closer to normal and perhaps a little below at times."
